Reasonable attempts have been made to report accurate and complete information.
Multnomah County cannot hold more people in the jail than there is space available. When there are not enough jail beds to hold people booked or those required to be held by a judge, the Sheriff’s Office has the authority to release inmates that pose the least risk to the community. The Board of County Commissioners in Resolution 07-141 (Establishment of a Jail Population Management Plan for the Multnomah County Detention Center) created criteria that allows for an objective calculation of those that serve the most and least risk to the community. This results in a matrix score. When there are more people who need a bed than available beds those with the lowest matrix scores are released back into the community, and those with the highest scores remain in jail.
